I lost a day....
I left Des Moines on 9/10, flew all day 9/11 and arrived in Singapore on 9/12 (due to the time zone difference). I was amazed that my flight from DSM to Chicago arrived in Chicago....EARLY, and so my next flight (which was somewhat of a tight schedule to meet) was no problem. I flew to Newark, NJ. I had a lovely lady from NJ two seats away and we didn't have anyone in between us so we chatted the entire 2.5 hour trip. What a blessing to make the time go faster! I then checked into Singapore Airlines. The person that checked me in at the counter actually walked me through security and hand delivered me to the passenger lounge. There was food, drink, magazines, newspapers, and a lounge area to wait so you weren't waiting in the terminal. How nice! I was booked on an all business class flight. The seating area was nice and wide! I was in a seat area along a window, but it was right by the galley. Before we even left the ground the crew had me moved to the middle aisle out of the hub-bub of the galley. Very nice of them. The seat was nice (too bad I didn't learn how to release the knob so the foot rest came up until about 15 hours into the 20 hour ride)....oh well. There was lots of personal space. The seat also folded out to a bed. I wasn't thrilled with that bed, and will prefer to just recline my seat and use the footrest on the way home from Singapore. The food was probably good....you know me, I prefer "plain" and this was "funky". I ate some Terriyaki Steak (that had a sauce...a condiment...oh my!) and strawberry ice cream. I was sleeping during the next meal, but that was fine. I had fresh fruit and yoghurt (that's how they spelled it) this morning. I had my own tv with a headset. The TV had movies, tv shows, games, educational information and at any time you could see what route the plane was taking and where we were. I was shocked to find out that we left NJ and flew NORTH over Canada and over "the top of the world" (so to speak) and over China, Thailand, Malaysia and on to Singapore. The airport was lovely....clean and clearly marked where to go. I went through the passport inspection area with no problems (there was some concern previously because my work visa has not arrived yet, but I had no problems). I then went to the luggage area....and I heard my name (pronounced correctly, but said as TJELTA DEBORAH instead of DEBORAH TJELTA) announced twice. I could not tell what they were saying so I asked someone from the airport and they said "We regret to inform you that your luggage did not make the flight with you." This was BAD news!!!! Apparently American Airlines didn't check my luggage onto Singapore Airlines in NJ as they said they would. Now, normally I would have a change of clothes and all my make up with me, but this one time, I didn't. I received a t-shirt, some toiletry items and some money to purchase any needs I had until my luggage arrives tomorrow. I was also suppose to have a car waiting for me to take me to the apartment, but there was no one with my name on their paper, so I got a cab. When I walked into the apartment building the person at the front desk said "Welcome Deb". I was amazed! Apparently I was the only person checking in that morning at that hour. They wondered why I was in a cab, and then the car driver called....he was at the wrong luggage claim area, so no wonder I couldn't find him. I was escorted to my apartment....and I quickly called my Mom and then my brother. I'm here...it seems so odd!
