Saturday...almost without shopping!

I decided I needed to have a day out that didn't involve shopping....since shopping is the national past time here, it's almost impossible not to shop as you are passing stores everywhere you go.

As I've said, using the train system is so easy. I'm including pictures of the "charts" that are at each train platform so you can see how easy it is to know which train to get on.

This first picture is one of the signs and you can see the arrow that says Platform A 4...if you get on this train it will take you all these places.

Here's the up close so you can see the name of each stop...and it tells you an approximate amount of minutes it takes to get there. At the bottom is Somerset where I get on. If I want to go to Toa Payoh it will take me 20 minutes. Isn't that cool!!!!

Saturday I was out looking for where the church is I'll be attending on Sunday. Since it's so hot in the morning (hottest time of the day...complete opposite of Iowa) I wanted to be sure I had the quickest route so I'm not soaked with sweat (yuck) by the time I get to church. I took the train to Clarke Quay and headed to the place I know where there is an escalator. It was being worked on. Instead of walking to the other side of the train station I decided to take the stairs. The sign below actually told me how many stairs there are on this particular staircase...90!!!! Wow...I'm a wimp, 90 is a lot of stairs. Thankfully it wasn't 90 straight up. It was 9 then a landing, turn the corner, 9 more...and continued to the top. I have to admit I got about half way up and wasn't sure I could go the remaining way...so I rested. When I turned the landing there was a security guard sitting down and he said "It's a long way up and sometimes you have to rest a bit"....oh, that made me feel so much better!
Those 90 steps were well worth it....look at how beautiful the sky and clouds were Saturday in Singapore!

There are signs all over at escalators to "keep left" and not stand two by two on the escalator. That is so the right hand "lane" is available for those in a hurry and wanting to rush by you. There are places that I've seen this followed, and then there are places that no one cares and everyone stands where ever they want to. For those that are in a rush, I'm sure it's a real problem. So at the train stations on Saturday there were girls standing holding signs "thanks for keeping left" and their t-shirts said they were doing "project kept left"....apparently they are trying to educate Singapore!
Saturday night Sandy and I went to Sentosa. It's an island area at Marina Bay. We took the light rail to the island from Vivo City Mall. There was a free jazz by the beach concert going on.
Here's the band. They were very good. There was an outodoor restaurant at "cool deck" (site of the concert) and you could sit at a table or on the ground and enjoy the concert. There were people of all ages there, some dancing, some swaying and some just watching. The evening was cool and it was a lovely time.
Now for the shopping part....I almost made it...a whole day without spending money shopping...the light rail takes you back to Vivo City mall....and this is where the catch occurs...when we were walking to the MRT (train) and going through Vivo City Mall I saw this purse....oh my...had to have it. It's very small, but has the coolest geometric shapes on it. How could I pass it up, and it was very inexpensive too!!!
