In Iowa we carry travel sized Kleenexes in our purse, but in Singapore they are used for napkins and "table markers". Most restaurants in Singapore do not give you napkins, so you pull out your Kleenex and use those. They are sold here, not necessarily Kleenex brand, in every size imaginable and they all have decorations on the packaging. I've seen Winnie the Pooh, flowers, artsy designs etc. If the restaurant is a "western" restaurant such as Burger King or Rock Bottom, then you receive napkins.
Also, if you go to a public food court or restaurant and there is a package of Kleenex sitting on the table, that means the table is reserved and you cannot set there. So odd.
Yesterday, we went to a food court area and not only were places marked as reserve with Kleenex, but people actually set at a table with people they didn't know. If you walked up to a table that had four seats and two were taken, you just sat down and started eating at one of the other spots. You take your cue from the persons already sitting there as to whether or not you speak to them. It's culturally okay to speak to some and not to others, so it's best to wait for them to speak first.
